I’ve decided I’m going to start applying for other jobs. Not
because I’m unhappy. Not because I am itching to make a change, necessarily.
Right now…it’s for the experience and to see what else is out there. I look at
it this way:
At some point in the (most likely) near future I will want
to move out of my current position. I like the idea that I can leisurely think
about it now and try to make strategic decisions of who/where to apply to,
instead of being forced to apply or find a job out of necessity. I make a habit
of advising high school students to take a myriad of courses while they’re in
the safety of high school and aren’t paying college tuition to take a course in
something they merely have a side interest in learning. So I’m pretty much
taking my own advice in doing this. This Ed. S. program is about expansion
(your abilities, your network, your interests, etc.). So that’s what I feel
like this is, expanding my options.
I somewhat feel like a fish out of water doing this, but
that’s probably a good thing.
Forbes.com has a good list of reminders about
searching for a job here.
The link of “13 Pictures”
is also pretty interesting. Not earth-shattering stuff, but just great
reminders. In the world of education I think some of these things get lost in
the shuffle while we continuously have the “are we corporate or non-corporate”
debate, and we act as if some of these rules don’t apply. I think there’s much merit
in this advice, though.
Kristin,
ReplyDeleteMake room for me on that boat! My situation is slightly different as my contract with McClarin ends in May. I have to find a new job. I am likely to take a pay cut to do it as well.
I am reaching out there to everyone. We live in a time when you need to know someone to have an "in" somewhere. I have applied to Region 4 schools in Houston and Palm Beach County in Florida. I am beginning to think I may have to return to the classroom and work my way up to move on.
Let me know if you find any secrets to moving on! I could use some support along the way!
Tim
This is exciting and certainly stressful! I think it is important to think long term and how your next position will allow you to achieve your goals. I was glad to read how proactive you are with this process.
